Three and a Half RoomsDeep Retrofit of a 3-Room Cottage |
This 1930s mass-concrete cottage was heated by three separate fireplaces and lacked any insulation at all. As the budget was tight, extending was not an option; therefore maximising every inch of space was key to the design approach.
A small porch was added to the entrance of the house. Careful positioning of the kitchen units, high ceilings in the reception rooms, the addition of roof lights, and space-saving solutions such as bench-storage, a Murphy table and room-in-roof bedroom, delivered a home that feels bright and spacious. The windows and doors were replaced. Insulation was added to the floors and roof. The walls were wrapped with external insulation. An air-source heat pump was connected to the new underfloor heating system and electric fireplace. |
