The Outbuildings

Cottage Renovation & Extension, Co. Leitrim

Originally a separate three-room cottage and three-room outbuilding, this project links these two buildings with a new timber-frame extension. The floor plan more than doubled.

The south-facing outbuildings have become the social/public side of the house, containing a kitchen, dining room and living room, all with views on to the Dartry Mountains. The bedrooms and bathroom are in the original cottage. The entrance hall is in the link-extension, which also houses the utility room, shower room and heating/hot water kit.

Many of the stone walls are exposed internally and salvaged timber floorboards enhance the historic character of this home. The outbuildings were wrapped in hempcrete to improve comfort levels, while wood-fibre and cellulose (recycled newspaper) insulate the roof. Internally, earth plaster was applied to the walls. Lime was used externally.
